Werewolves – Basic Villagers

If you play the game Werewolves and want to get your teeth into all of the common roles, here are the ways we play them.

Villager

The simplest of characters… You know nothing and have no special powers. Basic, but the mainstay of the game for those learning and the purists.

In our pack there is only one villager card like this, but with the same printed on both sides so everyone knows you are a villager. I use labourers instead as they get more interesting in larger games.

Werewolf

The enemy hiding within the village. Normal villager by day, but waking each night to chose a victim to devour. They might give away their identity by acting suspiciously, in their voting patterns or most likely by being discovered by the Seer, and so the Seer is usually their main target. The key strength is they know who each other are, when the rest of the villagers only know their own roles.

Seer

The villagers one clear source of information on who the Werewolves are. Each night the Seer wakes and picks whose identity they will discover in their crystal ball. The moderator can play this in two ways, either simply showing them the player’s card or if you know who is who in the village and want to make it harder, you can just tell them what team the player is on (Villager, Werewolf or Solo) either verbally or using a sign. The Seer then needs to be careful not to be too obvious about how they reveal the information. If they look like they have the knowledge the Werewolves will eat them the next night. A clever Seer will know when to come out and say they are the Seer, or ask the defender to defend them. But equally a canny Werewolf could try pretending to be the Seer.

Witch

Every village needs a witch to make magical potions. In this village, the Witch is woken at the end of the night and the Moderator indicates the identity of the Werewolves’ victim. The Witch has one potion which they can use once in the game to heal the Wolves’ victim. The Witch is then asked if they want to use their other potion to poison someone, and again can only do this once per game and kill someone.
